Hip Hop Film Festival Expands to 5 Days, Will Pay Filmmakers
The 11th edition hits New York Aug. 19–23 with 'Checks Not Trophies.'
The Hip Hop Film Festival is leveling up. The 11th annual edition expands into a five-day destination event — dubbed "5 Days of FRESH on the Hudson" — running August 19–23 with its hub at LOOK Dine-In Cinemas in Dobbs Ferry and programming at Eastern Effects, B&H and Bronxlandia, plus an August 20 collaboration with the Bronx Museum of the Arts.
The headline change is financial: a new "Checks Not Trophies" initiative commits to paying every participating filmmaker rather than handing out certificates, aiming to give independent creators direct support toward sustainable careers.
The festival also rolled out tiered passes — from a free community-screening tier to an all-access VIP — and virtual streaming for those who can't make it to the Hudson.
