'Michael' Becomes the Highest-Grossing Music Biopic Ever
The MJ film passed 'Oppenheimer' on its way toward $1 billion.
The Michael Jackson story is breaking records on screen. "Michael," Antoine Fuqua's biopic starring Jaafar Jackson as his late uncle, has grossed $977 million worldwide — edging past Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" ($965 million) to become, by these numbers, the highest-grossing music biopic ever.
Released in April, the film opened to $217 million globally and has pulled $370 million domestically, with projections pushing it toward $1 billion. It now ranks as Lionsgate's third-highest domestic grosser of all time.
The MJ effect hit streaming, too: his solo catalog drew 137.5 million on-demand streams in the film's opening week, a 146% jump over his previous career high.
