Tidal Won't Pay Royalties on Fully AI-Generated Music
New rules add 'AI' badges and block synthetic-track payouts.
Tidal is drawing a line on AI music. Effective July 15, the streamer will badge AI-generated tracks in-app, deploy tools to detect and remove releases that impersonate artists, and — most notably — block 100% AI-generated music from earning royalties or qualifying for direct-to-fan sales.
"AI's takeover of the music industry (and your recommendations) isn't inevitable if we take even greater steps now," the company said.
The move stakes out a middle ground: Bandcamp banned AI music outright in January, while Apple Music added transparency tags in March but still allows monetization. Tidal lands in between — label it, but don't pay it.
